Enos 1:5–6—What blessings did Enos receive from the Lord?

When Enos placed complete trust in Jesus Christ, repented of his sins, and determined to keep the commandments of God, the Lord spoke peace to his soul. The Lord told Enos, “Thy sins are forgiven thee” (Enos 1:5). Enos accepted the divine forgiveness and was blessed with peace through the atoning power of Jesus Christ (see Mosiah 4:2–3; Alma 36:18–21).

Enos 1:5, 10—The voice of the Lord came into the mind of Enos. What other prophets have had similar experiences?

Many prophetic leaders have received answers to their prayers through the voice of the Lord coming to their mind. One example is President Harold B. Lee, who said, “I was once in a situation where I needed help. The Lord knew I needed help and I was on an important mission. I was awakened in the early hours of the morning as though someone had wakened me to straighten me out on something that I had planned to do in a contrary course, and there was clearly mapped out before me as I lay there that morning, just as surely as though someone had sat on the edge of my bed and told me what to do. Yes, the voice of the Lord comes into our minds and we are directed thereby.” 232

Enos 1:26–27—What is the “more sure word of prophecy”?

Enos was assured through the “more sure word of prophecy” of the rewards of a faithful life (Enos 1:27). Joseph Smith taught that “the more sure word of prophecy means a man’s knowing that he is sealed up unto eternal life” or that his calling and election is sure (D&C 131:5).

The Book of Jarom

Jarom 1:3—How did Jarom express frustration over the wicked practices of the Nephites?

Jarom, like other prophets, used the body as a symbol to express the prevailing conditions of his day, describing his people with phrases such as “hard hearts,” “blind minds,” “stiff necks,” and “deaf ears.” Jarom marveled that the Nephites had not been destroyed because of their unbridled sins (see Jarom 1:3), yet recognized their high state of civilization. Jarom described the Nephites as proficient in “fine workmanship of wood, in buildings, and in machinery, and also in iron and copper, and brass and steel” (Jarom 1:8). He also recognized that they had “multiplied exceedingly and spread upon the face of the land, and [become] exceedingly rich in gold, and in silver, and in precious things” (Jarom 1:8). Yet their actions were not pleasing to God. Jarom learned the long-suffering nature of the Lord God through observing the Nephites’ disregard for the commandments. 233

Jarom 1:5—In what way did Jarom link the word remembrance with keeping the covenants of God?

Like other Nephite recorders, Jarom linked remembrance with covenants between God and his chosen people; he and other writers used the phrases “to keep” and “to remember” interchangeably. For example, in Jarom 1:5 the expression is “to keep,” whereas in Mosiah 13:16–19 the expression is “to remember” (see Deut. 5:12; Ex. 20: 8).
